RESUMO

Aroma compounds play a key role in wine quality due to their importance in wine aroma. The aim of the present study is to investigate the influence of cold pre-fermentative maceration (CPM) treatment on aromatic and sensory properties of white wines from four grape varieties (Tempranillo Blanco, Maturana Blanca, Viura and Garnacha Blanca) during two consecutive years (2019 and 2020). A total of 62 aroma compounds belonging to different chemical families were identified using headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS). CPM treatment enhanced the total relative concentration of alcohols, esters and acids compared to control wines. Regarding sensorial properties, esters made the greatest contribution to the studied white wines, mainly through the development of floral and fruity notes. On the other hand, CPM treatment did not significantly influence the total relative concentration of terpenoids, and different trends were observed according to grape variety and vintage. The obtained results showed differences in the wine's aromatic complexity according to the grape variety, the vintage and the treatment applied and suggested that CPM treatment could represent a suitable approach to manipulate the aromatic profile and enhance the aromatic quality and complexity of wine.

RESUMO

AIMS: Vasovagal syncope (VVS) is the most common type of syncope and is usually considered a benign disorder. The potential for injury is worrisome but the likelihood is unknown. We aimed to determine the proportion of patients injured due to VVS. METHODS AND RESULTS: A systematic search of studies published until August 2020 was performed in multiple medical and nursing databases. Included studies had data on the proportion of patients with injury due to VVS prior to study enrolment. Random effects methods were used. Twenty-three studies having 3593 patients met inclusion criteria. Patients were diagnosed clinically with VVS, and 82% had >2 syncopal episodes before enrolment. Tilt test was positive in 60% and 14 studies reported comorbidities (32.6% hypertensive). The weighted mean injury rate was 33.5% [95% confidence interval (CI): 27.3-40.5%]. The likelihood of injury correlated with population age (r = 0.4, P = 0.05), but not with sex, positive tilt test, or hypertension. The injury rates were 25.7% (95% CI: 19.1-32.8%) in studies with younger patients (mean age ≤50 years, n = 1803) and 43.4% (95% CI: 34.9-52.3%) in studies with older patients (P = 0.002). Nine studies reported major injuries; with a weighted mean rate of major injuries of 13.9% (95% CI: 9.5-19.8%). CONCLUSION: Injuries due to syncope are frequent, occurring in 33% of patients with VVS. The risk of major injuries is substantial. Older patients are at higher risk. Clinicians should be aware of the risk of injuries when providing care and advice to patients with VVS.

RESUMO

Synergism among reflexes probably contributes to exercise hyperventilation in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Thus, we investigated whether the carotid chemoreflex and the muscle metaboreflex interact to the regulation of ventilation ( V˙E ) in HFrEF. Ten patients accomplished 4-min cycling at 60% peak workload and then recovered for 2 min under either: (a) 21% O2 inhalation (tonic carotid chemoreflex activity) with legs' circulation free (inactive muscle metaboreflex); (b) 100% O2 inhalation (suppressed carotid chemoreflex activity) with legs' circulation occluded (muscle metaboreflex activation); (c) 21% O2 inhalation (tonic carotid chemoreflex activity) with legs' circulation occluded (muscle metaboreflex activation); or (d) 100% O2 inhalation (suppressed carotid chemoreflex activity) with legs' circulation free (inactive muscle metaboreflex) as control. V˙E , tidal volume (VT ) and respiratory frequency (fR ) were similar between each separated reflex (protocols a and b) and control (protocol d). Calculated sum of separated reflexes effects was similar to control. Oppositely, V˙E (mean ± SEM: Δ vs. control = 2.46 ± 1.07 L/min, p = .05) and fR (Δ = 2.47 ± 0.77 cycles/min, p = .02) increased versus control when both reflexes were simultaneously active (protocol c). Therefore, the carotid chemoreflex and the muscle metaboreflex interacted to V˙E regulation in a fR -dependent manner in patients with HFrEF. If this interaction operates during exercise, it can have some contribution to the HFrEF exercise hyperventilation.

RESUMO

Galactomannan films from Cassia grandis seeds, associated or not with Cramoll 1,4, were used on topical wounds of rats for the evaluation of the healing process during 14days. All of the films were evaluated by cytotoxic assay, FTIR and lectin hemagglutinating activity (HA). Forty-five male rats were submitted to aseptic dermal wounds (Ø=0.8cm) and divided in groups (n=15): control, test 1, and test 2, treated respectively with saline, galactomannan film and film with immobilized Cramoll 1,4. Macroscopic evaluations were performed by clinical observations and area measurements, and microscopic analysis by histological criteria. Epithelial cell proliferation and differentiation was immunohistochemically assessed using CK14 and PCNA. The presence of CO peaks in the FTIR spectrum confirmed the immobilization of Cramoll 1,4 in the film, while the residual HA confirmed the stability of the lectin after immobilization with 90.94% of the initial HA. The films presented non-cytotoxicity and cell viability exceeding 80%. All of the animals presented re-epithelization around 10days, furthermore test 2 group showed a diffuse response at the stromal tissue and the basal layer associated with wounds completely closed with 11days of experiment. The results suggest a promising use of the films as topical wound curatives.

RESUMO

This work aimed to characterize the coagulant properties of protein preparations from Moringa oleifera seeds in the removal of humic acids from water. Three distinct preparations were assayed, namely extract (seeds homogenized with 0.15 M NaCl), fraction (extract precipitated with 60% w/v ammonium sulphate) and cMoL (protein purified with guar gel column chromatography). The extract showed the highest coagulant activity in a protein concentration between 1 mg/L and 180 mg/L at pH 7.0. The zeta potential of the extract (-10 mV to -15 mV) was less negative than that of the humic acid (-41 mV to -42 mV) in a pH range between 5.0 and 8.0; thus, the mechanism that might be involved in this coagulation activity is adsorption and neutralization of charges. Reduction of total organic carbon (TOC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was observed in water samples containing 9 mg/L carbon as humic acid when treated with 1 mg/L of the extract. A decrease in colour and in the aromatic content of the treated water was also observed. These results suggested that the extract from M. oleifera seeds in a low concentration (1 mg/L) can be an interesting natural alternative for removing humic acid from water in developing countries. The extract dose determined in the present study does not impart odour or colour to the treated water.

RESUMO

Different groups of biosurfactants exhibit diverse properties and display a variety of physiological functions in producer microorganisms; these include enhancing the solubility of hydrophobic/water-insoluble compound, heave metal binding, bacterial pathogenesis, cell adhesion and aggregation, quorum sensing and biofilm formation. Candida sphaerica was grown in a low cost medium, consisting of distilled water supplemented with 9% refinery residue of soybean oil and 9% corn steep liquor, for 144 h at 28°C and 150 rpm. The cell-free supernatant obtained at the end of the experiments was submitted to extraction, and afterward the biosurfactant was isolated using methanol with a yield of 9 g l(-1). The critical micelle concentration of the biosurfactant was found to be 0.25 mg ml(-1) with a surface tension of 25 mN m(-1). Several concentrations of the biosurfactant (0.625-10 mg ml(-1)) were used to evaluate its antimicrobial and antiadhesive activities against a variety of microorganisms. The biosurfactant showed antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus oralis (68%), Candida albicans (57%), and Staphylococcus epidermidis(57.6%) for the highest concentration tested. Furthermore, the biosurfactant at a concentration of 10 mg ml(-1) inhibited the adhesion between 80 and 92% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus sanguis12. Inhibition of adhesion with percentages near 100% occurred for the higher concentrations of biosurfactant used. Results gathered in this study point to a potential use of the biosurfactant in biomedical applications.
